Frequently asked questions
Is there land tax in the Northern Territory?
No. The NT is the only Australian state or territory with no land tax, for homes, rentals and commercial property alike. There is nothing to pay annually on land value and nothing to calculate.
What do NT property owners pay instead?
Council rates apply as everywhere in Australia, and stamp duty applies when you buy (using the NT formula up to $525,000, then flat rates). There is no annual state tax on landholdings.
Does interstate land count towards NT taxes?
No. Land tax is levied by each state where the land sits, so an NT investor with property in another state pays that state’s land tax on that land, but nothing to the NT.
